“Fatherland” today published an interview with Hereditary Prince Alois on the popular initiative “Deadline solution for Liechtenstein”. In it, the hereditary prince announced at the beginning of the collection of signatures that he would exercise his veto if it was accepted by the people. A statement that has weight and consequences: The change in the law cannot come into force without the sanction of the sovereign. A few hours after the publication, the FBP Presidium speaks out. She calls on all sides “to be objective and fair in the upcoming discussion.” In the announcement, the FBP Executive Board classifies the current situation.
Hereditary prince announces veto against deadline solution
«Despite the Hereditary Prince’s announcement that he will not sanction the initiative if it is accepted, those entitled to vote have the right to freely form their own opinion. An honest debate involves listening to both sovereigns – prince and people,” explains the FBP and comes to the following conclusion: “It would therefore be wrong to portray a possible referendum as meaningless.” For this reason, the FBP is also campaigning for the popular initiative “Deadline solution for Liechtenstein”, provided that the necessary signatures are obtained, to be submitted to the people for a vote even if it is accepted by the state parliament.
The current development is being watched with interest, as the statement shows. “The FBP neither wants to create a state political crisis nor trivialize the challenging initial situation. Liechtenstein’s political order is based on the interaction between the prince and the people,” emphasizes the Presidium. “If the positions of the two sovereigns diverge on such a fundamental issue, this presents the country with a particular challenge.” This makes the willingness “to look for a socially, legally and politically viable solution” all the more important. The FBP will work hard to achieve this.
FBP state executive board formulates slogan on Thursday
The popular initiative “affects fundamental ethical, social and political questions,” emphasizes the FBP Executive Board. The FBP’s state executive board will meet next Thursday to determine the party’s stance. “It is important to the FBP Executive Board to discuss the different arguments openly and carefully.” The initiators of the popular initiative will present their initiative and present their arguments to the state executive board. In addition, the opposing position and the state policy implications are presented and discussed so that the members of the state executive board can get a comprehensive picture and make a decision.
