The work to deepen the quays allows the Cosumar Group to charter large capacity vessels.
Shipping: A first at the port of Casablanca. The Marsa Maroc multipurpose terminal welcomed a large capacity ship for the first time since the recent commissioning of the first phase of the project to deepen its quays.
The port of Casablanca is taking a new step in strengthening its logistics capacities. Thanks to the deepening of the first phase of the docks of the Marsa Maroc multipurpose terminal, a 200-meter bulk sugar carrier carrying nearly 55,000 tons of raw sugar for the Cosumar Group was able to dock there for the first time, illustrating the operational and economic gains expected from this strategic project. “We are witnessing the opening of the port of Casablanca to a new range of calls for large capacity bulk carrier ships. With 230 linear meters of quay now rehabilitated and deepened to -12 meters, the terminal can accommodate ships with a capacity of around 60,000 tonnes,” indicates Khalid Mansour, director of the Bulk Business Unit at Marsa Morocco. And to specify: “Our objective is to increase this length to 530 meters by 2028, thus giving the terminal a total capacity of more than 8 million tonnes”.
On the Cosumar side, Anas Jamal Eddine, sales, marketing and supply chain director of the group, affirmed that “the partnership between the Cosumar Group and Marsa Maroc perfectly illustrates what a port operator-industrial collaboration should be: a lever in the service of joint growth. Combined with the operational improvement actions undertaken jointly, the dock deepening works allow the Cosumar Group to charter larger capacity vessels, generating significant port and logistical optimizations for its competitiveness.
It should be noted that this stopover was made possible thanks to the new draft of 12 meters which the terminal now has. Processed under the best operational conditions, it illustrates the first concrete benefits of the project to deepen the multipurpose terminal of the port of Casablanca.
