While the discussions about ‘early-raid elections’ continue with the ‘absolute nullity’ decision given against CHP, Chief Advisor to the President and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, Mehmet Uçum, suggested Sunday, April 16, 2028 for early elections.
Uçum wrote an article on President Erdoğan’s candidacy and constitutional debates on his social media account. Stating that the concept of “renewal elections” should be used instead of the concept of “early elections”, Uçum stated that Türkiye does not need an early election and said, “In general, despite all the developments in the world and the region in the current period, Turkey is not in an extraordinary situation in terms of the functioning of the political system. Moreover, there is no exceptional condition that requires renewing the parliament and government.”

Pointing to the date of April 16, 2028 for the general elections in his article, Uçum said: “It can be predicted that the issue of renewing the elections in the six-month period between the last quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028 will focus on the day on which the elections will be held. One of the possible days is Sunday, April 16, 2028.”
SYMBOLIC DAY
Uçum said, “If the Turkish Grand National Assembly takes such a decision, holding general elections on April 16, the day of the referendum in which the Presidential System of Government was adopted, that is, on the eleventh anniversary of the referendum, would have a strong symbolic meaning.”
ELECTION DATE UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS IS MAY 7
Stating that there is no need for a constitutional referendum for Erdoğan’s re-candidacy, Uçum stated that the Presidential elections, which should normally be held on May 7, 2028, can be held if the Parliament decides on early elections “on any of the days between February 9 and February 15 in 2028”. Uçum said, “Türkiye needs President Erdoğan.”
