The end of the war… and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump announced at dawn today that an agreement had been reached with Iran, stressing that the agreement achieves the main goal of ensuring that Iran does not possess a nuclear weapon. He also announced the lifting of the blockade imposed on Iran and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping traffic immediately and without fees. For his part, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced that Washington and Tehran have announced an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and said that preliminary meetings will precede the implementation phase.
The Pakistani Prime Minister praised the role played by the mediating countries in achieving the US-Iranian agreement, thanking the Kingdom and Turkey, describing it as a “tremendous role” in bringing points of view closer together. He also stressed that Qatar had a major role in the success of the mediation and reaching the final agreement.
Sherif explained that the official signing ceremony will be held in Switzerland on June 19, preceded by technical meetings to put the final touches on implementation mechanisms.
