The high commissioner of the UN for human rights, Volker Turksaid this Wednesday that his organization “firmly” requests that the United States lift the sanctions that have pushed the population of Cuba to a extreme suffering and they are caused death of the most vulnerable, children.
“This is not about politics or geopolitics, but about people’s suffering,” the high commissioner said in an appearance before the press at his agency’s headquarters in Geneva.
Türk emphasized that all the data that his agency receives about the situation on the island points to a dramatic situation, with shortages of medicines and food.
“We have seen the death of children because they do not receive the medications they requireand they cannot even access necessary surgical interventions,” he noted.
Türk maintained that all this “demands the lifting of sanctions, because they are not acceptable, especially due to the impact they have on the daily lives of ordinary Cubans.”
