If stinky martinis have taken over your garden, you don’t have to immediately reach for expensive and unhealthy preparations. A natural spray of a few simple ingredients can help keep them away from plants and fruit.
They belong to the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae), which have special glands from which they release a liquid with a strong smell as a form of defense.
In our area, the species Raphigaster nebulosa (stinking martin), Dolycoris baccarum and Halyomorpha halys – an invasive brown marbled bug – are most often encountered.
They are also attracted to plants rich in juices, especially fruits and vegetables, so they are common in gardens.
