On World Blood Donor Day, a number of events will be held at the Yolyan Hematology and Oncology Center aimed at informing citizens.
“Armenpress”–At the press conference held in the press hall, the director of “Yolyan” hematology and oncology center Hayk Grigoryan mentioned that the day is an opportunity to once again reflect on blood donation, being a blood donor, as well as to emphasize its importance.
“We witness every day how irreplaceable donor blood is in medicine, in saving people’s lives. We try to convey that message on various occasions. Every day, many people in hospitals need blood transfusions. So, there is always a need for life-saving blood,” said Hayk Grigoryan.

Andranik Shamilian, deputy director of the blood service of the “Yolyan” hematology and oncology center, noted that any healthy person over the age of 18 can become a blood donor. There are also some criteria that are also taken into account, for example, a person’s weight. In the case of men, the weight should be over 62 kg, in the case of women – over 52 kg. Arterial pressure and blood pressure should be within normal limits.
“There are certain contraindications, permanent and temporary. In the permanent case, infectious diseases that are transmitted through blood are taken into account. “Temporary contraindications refer to acute respiratory infections, fever, vaccinations, tattoos, the contraindication of which is 6 months,” said Andranik Shamilian.

The total number of blood transfusions in the republic is increasing year by year. Presenting the statistics of the last years, Hayk Grigoryan, director of “Yolyan” hematology and oncology center, noted that in 2023, the total number of blood transfusions was 22 thousand 162, in 2024 – 23 thousand 600, and in 2025 – 26 thousand 554.
“Of course, the general index is important, but more important is regular bloodwork, a sufficient amount of all blood groups. It is not necessary to wait for specific cases and to approach a large number of people to donate blood and say that this is enough. Believe me, all components of blood are constantly consumed and they must be replenished regularly,” said Hayk Grigoryan.
As for the blood service development policy, Hayk Grigoryan noted that noticeable work is being done in that direction. In particular, works are currently being carried out in the direction of creating a unified digital register. The creation of that digital unified database will enable all medical institutions of the republic to see within minutes where the necessary blood is. The system is partially operational today. Next is the introduction of international quality standards.
