The nomination came after Health State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig canceled a possible duel. SPÖ regional manager Wolfgang Zwander emphasized the unity in the decision.
The state party executive of the SPÖ Lower Austria has unanimously nominated Sven Hergovich as a candidate for election as chairman at the state party conference. Just a week ago, there were signs of a vote between the current chairman Hergovich and Health State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig. The latter then withdrew her candidacy. SPÖ regional manager Wolfgang Zwander emphasized the unity in the decision.
“In politically challenging times, there is a natural need among the population for stability, competence and leadership,” he said after the state party executive board meeting on Monday. “In this sense, the SPÖ Lower Austria is heading towards the state party conference and state elections with a unanimous vote for Sven Hergovich and new strength.”
At a meeting of the extended state party executive board on Wednesday, it was unanimously decided that Hergovich would stand for re-election at the end of May and be the top candidate in the 2028 state elections. Königsberger-Ludwig is running as deputy state party leader, it was said last week. She currently holds this position.
Social democracy has the best answers to the big problems of our time, said Zwander. “With today’s decisions, based on optimism and unity, we can now bring this strength even better to the people of Lower Austria.” In the months leading up to the state elections, the party wants to promote a social and strong Lower Austria.
