A father and his stepson were hospitalised after they were electrocuted while fleeing their home during an apparent electrical incident in Rampanalgas Village, Balandra, early Thursday morning.
Police said the incident occurred at about 4.30 a.m. at the home of Stephanie Charles, 45, of Lot 1 Rampanalgas Village.
Charles told investigators that she was at home with her family when she heard a loud noise and saw a bright flash of light, which she initially believed was a fire. She, along with four other family members, attempted to evacuate the house.
According to Charles, her 20-year-old son, Jesus Maharaj, was the last person to leave the house. As he made his way into the yard, he reportedly tripped over a high-tension electricity line that had fallen to the ground and was electrocuted.
Seeing Maharaj lying on the ground, Charles’ common-law husband, Adrian Lewis, 37, rushed to assist him but was also electrocuted.
Both men were taken to the Toco Health Centre, where they were treated before being transferred to the Sangre Grande Hospital.
Charles told police that her son had informed her he tripped over a high-tension line in the yard while trying to escape the house.
Investigators were unable to interview Maharaj or Lewis because they were receiving medical treatment.
