How would Romanians vote in a referendum for the dismissal of President Nicușor Dan. "It has no support in Romanian society" POLL

A POLL carried out by INSCOP Research in the period 11–14 May 2026 shows that the majority of Romanians would oppose the dismissal of President Nicușor Dan in the event of a referendum on this topic.

According to the Informat.ro – INSCOP Research BAROMETER, 11th edition, carried out between May 11-14, 2026, the majority of Romanians would vote against the dismissal of President Nicușor Dan in the event of a referendum on this issue.

“The impeachment of President Nicușor Dan through a possible referendum has no support in Romanian society, not even after the application of a question that tests a hypothetical situation. The proximity to the 2025 electoral moment and the systemic risks perceived by the majority of voters, in the tense electoral context of 2024-2025, fuel the public’s hostility towards a referendum to impeach the president, which would only amplify the uncertainties already huge and costly from an economic and social point of view. In other words, despite the contextual political polarizations, the prospect of a rupture of such magnitude closes the ranks and determines the return of the population to the borders of the electoral basins configured in the second round of the presidential elections”, says Remus Ștefureac, director of INSCOP Research.

The majority of Romanians would vote against the dismissal

If a referendum on the impeachment of the president were held next Sunday, 44% of Romanians say they would vote for the impeachment of Nicușor Dan, while 50.7% would vote against the impeachment. 5.4% do not know or do not answer.

If we exclude the 5.4% of respondents who do not know or do not answer this question, it follows that 53.1% of Romanians would vote against the impeachment of the president, while 46.9% would vote for impeachment in the event of a referendum.

They would vote for the dismissal of President Nicușor Dan in a higher proportion than the rest of the population: voters GOLD (77%), people with education primaryă (63%), rural residents (55%), Tiktok users (59%).

They would vote against impeaching the president, in a higher percentage than average: voters PNL (86%), USR (86%) and P.S.D (59%), people over 60 (59%), those with higher education (73%), residents of Bucharest (68%) and large urban areas (61%).

The Informat.ro BAROMETER – INSCOP Research is a monthly opinion survey conducted by INSCOP Research at the behest of the Informat.ro news platform in partnership with the Strategic Thinking Group think-tank.

BAROMETRUL Informat.ro – INSCOP Research aims to bring topics of interest to public attention, to stimulate national conversations about various topics and public policies essential for Romania’s present and future, starting from the opinion of Romanians, in partnership with think tanks and prestigious academic institutions. It is an approach through which we aim to contribute to the consolidation of democracy, by using scientific and credible tools that bring the voice of citizens to the forefront of the public debate.

The data were collected between May 11-14, 2026. Research method: interview via questionnaire. The data were collected by the CATI method (telephone interviews), the volume of the simple random sample being 1,100 people, representative of the significant socio-demographic categories (sex, age, occupation) for the non-institutionalized population of Romania, aged 18 and over. The maximum allowable error of the data is ± 3% at a confidence level of 95%.
