Renovation of the K Bridge in Óbuda, which leads to Hajógyári Island, could begin this fall after Budapest Közút Zrt. launched a public procurement procedure to select a contractor, the company informed MTI on Wednesday.
Work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027—or by the end of 2027 if the optional portion included in the call for bids is ordered. The schedule of the works will be adjusted to the dates of the annual Generali Children’s Island and Sziget festivals so that the K-Bridge remains available to the public during these events.
The announcement described that the bridge, which opened in 1957, was originally built as a temporary structure, yet it has played a key role in accessing Hajógyári Island for decades. The goal of the current renovation is to make the structure safe and ensure its long-term use, while preserving the bridge’s existing character.

They emphasized that the project will not alter either the bridge’s function or its appearance, while significantly raising its technical standards. The most important element of the development is the complete replacement of the deck, which is in extremely poor condition, resulting in the roadway width expanding from 2.8 meters to 3.5 meters.
The new structure will also meet higher road load requirements, they added.
During the reconstruction, corrosion protection will be applied, the steel structures beneath the deck will be repaired and new support elements installed, and new drainage inlets will be built to improve water drainage, while vibration dampers will be installed to reduce bridge vibration, and electrical wires and communication cables will be relocated into protective conduits, they noted.
At the same time, the renovation of the sidewalks was included in the contract as an option, confirmed the announcement.
