A tragic traffic accident on the D1 highway near Liptovský Mikuláš in the direction of Poprad paralyzed traffic on Wednesday evening. Two employees of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic were sitting in the crashed official car that hit the guardrail.

As reported by the Žilina Regional Police on the social network, the accident occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 shortly before 7 p.m. The driver of a Škoda Superb passenger car crashed into the barriers on the right side of the road for unknown reasons. An expert from the road transport department was immediately called to the scene.
According to our information from the Department of the Interior, the vehicle was driven by an employee of the Department of Protocol of the Ministry of the Interior. The source said that the driver significantly exceeded the speed limit and did not adjust the driving speed during the heavy storm to the road conditions.
JOJ TV explained that the metal guardrails could not handle the impact, broke and punctured the vehicle, while the passenger was thrown from the cabin. He was given first aid on the spot by passing drivers, including a professional firefighter and paramedic. The 44-year-old driver succumbed to her injuries on the spot.
“A 39-year-old man with a chest injury on artificial pulmonary ventilation was transported to a hospital in Liptovský Mikuláš,” Petra Klimešová, spokeswoman for the Operation Center of the Rescue Health Service of the Slovak Republic, told the portal regiony.sk. After an emergency operation, he was taken to Martin, where he remains in a critical condition.
The identity of the crew was also confirmed by the spokesman of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic, Matej Neumann. The participants in the tragic traffic accident were two employees of the department who were in a company vehicle and were performing official duties at the time of the accident.
The scene of the tragedy was documented by the police using the most modern technology until late at night, due to which the given section of the highway was impassable for a long time. The exact causes and circumstances of the accident are the subject of an ongoing investigation.
