The football festival has not yet officially begun and the 2026 World Cup is already facing one of its first major crises.
Iran’s participation in the tournament has been embroiled in strong controversy after sports authorities in that country warned that the team could withdraw from the matches if there are demonstrations or political slogans against it in the stadiums.
The conflict arises in the midst of the delicate relationship between Iran and the United States, one of the hosts of the World Cup along with Mexico and Canada.
The geopolitical tensions between both nations have transferred concern to the sporting field, where Iranian authorities fear that the tournament will become a scene for protests.
Iran threatens to abandon matches
Iran’s Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamali, assured that his country’s federation has already informed FIFA about the position that the team would adopt in the event of political demonstrations during matches.
“We have informed FIFA that the members of the team would leave the match as soon as we heard political slogans in the stadiums”Donyamali told the Iranian portal Varzesh3.
The warning has generated an intense debate at the international level, since a possible withdrawal in the middle of the match would cause an unprecedented event in the recent history of World Cups.
Blocking of tickets for Iranian fans denounced
The threat comes just days after the Iranian Football Federation reported alleged difficulties related to access to tickets assigned by FIFA for its fans, a situation that, according to local media, has increased unrest among the country’s sports authorities.
Although FIFA has not commented publicly on these accusations, the issue adds a new ingredient of tension to a tournament that is already taking place under a complex international context.
