DR: the only Latin American country with three national films in its “top 10” attendance in 2025

The Dominican Republic was highlighted in the most recent edition of the Focus 2026 report: Trends in the global film market, presented by the European Audiovisual Observatory within the framework of the Marché du Film, by positioning three national productions within its Top 10 films by attendance in the country during 2025.

The study analyzes the main trends in film production, financing and consumption at a global level, and highlighted the behavior of the Dominican market within the region.

According to the report, the films “The Rejected”, directed by Yasser Michelen, under the production of Bougroup; “The Heir”, by Frank Perozo; and “Medias Hermanas”, by Yoel Morales, both produced by Caribbean Films, managed to position themselves among the ten most viewed films in movie theaters in the country during the past year, sharing billboards with productions from studios such as Disney, Warner Bros., Universal and Sony.

The most viewed film in 2025 in Dominican cinemas was the American “Lilo & Stitch”, with 392,645 box offices; followed by the Dominican “Los Rechazados”, with 158,875. In seventh place is the Dominican “El Heredero”, with 101,889 tickets, and in 10th “Medias Hermanas”, with 89,937 entries.

The Dominican Republic also achieves a national market share of 19%, which means that, of the total number of people who attended the cinema in 2025, 19% preferred to see a local production.

This performance positions the country as one of the strongest cases of integration between national production and local consumption in all of Latin America.

In comparison with the area, while most Latin American countries register a participation of local cinema between 0.5% and 10%, the Dominican Republic is located in the group with the highest performance, consolidating itself as one of the markets with the greatest presence of national productions within its own film market.

The analysis corresponds to the period between January 1 and January 31.

December 2025, which reflects the annual behavior of theater attendance

of cinema. In this sense, some productions, such as Medias Hermanas, are still

were on the billboard at the close of the measurement period.

The investigation positions the Dominican Republic as the only country in America

Latin with three national productions within its ranking, surpassing markets

regional films with the longest track record in terms of local cinema presence at the box office.

The inclusion of the Dominican Republic in this international analysis presented

during the Marché du Film at the Cannes Festival reaffirms its position within

of the global cinematographic panorama, as well as the consolidation of its relevance in

terms of local consumption and regional visibility in recent years. Together, these

results confirm the structural strengthening of the film sector

Dominican, evidenced both in its market share and its growing

international projection, positioning the country as an emerging reference in the Caribbean

    and Latin America.
