The China–Laos 500kV power grid interconnection project was officially commissioned on Monday in simultaneous ceremonies held in Vientiane and Kunming, Yunnan Province, marking a major milestone in strengthening cross-border energy connectivity and mutual power support between the two countries.
The ceremony in Vientiane was attended by more than 100 representatives from government and business sectors of both Laos and China. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone presided over the event, pressing the start button to officially launch the project.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Meng Zhenping, Chairman of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG), said the project enables two-way power transmission capacity of up to 1.5 million kilowatts. It is expected to supply around 3 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, contributing to greener and low-carbon energy development while bringing tangible benefits to people in both countries.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Mr Malaythong Kommasith described the project as a strategic backbone for Laos’ power sector. He noted that it will help ease domestic transmission bottlenecks and support the expansion of renewable energy, particularly in northern Laos.
Chinese Ambassador to Laos, Ms. Fang Hong said the project serves as a “green energy artery” enhancing bilateral connectivity. She added that China stands ready to use such initiatives as a model to deepen cooperation in clean energy, support Laos’ energy transition, and further advance the building of a closer China–Laos community with a shared future.
The project is a key component of the China–Laos action plan on building a community with a shared future. Construction began in February 2025.
The transmission line spans 177.5 kilometres, linking Yunnan Province in China with the northern Lao provinces of Oudomxay and Luang Namtha. Of this, 145 kilometres are located in China and 32.5 kilometres in Laos.
The respective sections are constructed and operated by China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG) and Électricité du Laos Transmission Company Limited (EDL-T).
