THE Kandes Rugby League Club will make history tomorrow when they play their first-ever match at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
The competition newcomers have enjoyed a remarkable debut season in the 2026 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup and now face their biggest test yet against competition leaders PRK Mendi Muruks in the Amazing Round clash.
Kandes have quickly become one of the competition’s surprise packages. After dropping to eighth place early in the season, the side steadily climbed the ladder through strong performances and teamwork. Their rise eventually saw them reach the top of the standings before settling into second place after Round 8.
Head coach Stanley Tepend said the club was proud of its progress and excited about playing on one of the country’s biggest rugby league stages.
“This is a special moment for the club,” Tepend said. “The players have worked hard all season and earned the opportunity to play in such a big match. We are looking forward to the challenge against the Muruks.”
Much of the Kandes’ success has been built around the leadership of captain Charlie Simon.
The experienced halfback has guided the team with calmness and confidence, helping control matches while creating scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Another key player has been rising star Ames John. The hardworking back-rower has impressed throughout the season with his powerful running, strong defence and ability to play the full 80 minutes. Despite his young age, John has become one of the team’s leaders on and off the field.
Saturday’s clash presents another opportunity for Kandes to prove they belong among the competition’s elite teams. A victory over the ladder leaders would further strengthen their premiership credentials and mark a memorable chapter in the club’s historic first season.
