(PHOTO) Scandal over a school toilet in the Criuleni district. Ceban and Perchun exchanged accusations

A resident of the village of Cimiseni, Criuleni district, published photographs of the sanitary block of the gymnasium on social networks. According to her, the educational institution went through all the bureaucratic procedures to repair the toilet, but the authorities rejected the project. The mayor of Chisinau and leader of the MAN party, Ion Ceban, accused the authorities of “corruption and failure to make normal toilets for children.” In response, Education Minister Dan Perchun called the mayor’s statements “populism” and advised him to “deal with the problems of the capital, and not the sanitary blocks of rural schools.”

On April 16, a woman wrote on social networks that the King Michael I Gymnasium in the village of Cimiseni went through all the bureaucratic procedures to renovate the toilet, but the project was rejected due to insufficient “impact” and “complexity.” She posted photos of the sanitary block and said that “this is the reality that 227 students, teachers and staff face every day.”

“The right to hygiene is not a reward, but a responsibility of the state,” she wrote.

    What did Cheban say?

On April 17, the mayor of Chisinau and leader of the National Alternative Movement (MAN) party, Ion Ceban, commented on the situation in Cimiseni.

“This is the reality in the country and the corruption in power. There are such cases in hundreds of settlements and educational institutions. They boast about “European” projects, but cannot make normal toilets for children so that they do not go outside. And at the same time they call themselves “reformers” who are supposedly developing the country. In reality, they plan to liquidate 600 city halls, close schools under the pretext of reform, curtail programs like Prima Casă, cut the budget for road repairs and do nothing to stop the rise in fuel prices, while people continue to leave the country,” Ceban wrote on social networks.

Reaction of the Minister of Education

Education Minister Dan Perciun said that “the mayor of Chisinau continues to express his frustration and impotence on social networks.”

“He has been unable to approve the municipal budget for two years and solve at least one serious problem of the city – stray dogs, neglected yards, destroyed road infrastructure, lack of parking or overcrowded schools, but every day he makes baseless accusations. Now I’ve taken on sanitary units in villages,” Perchun said.

Perchun emphasized that over the past two years, the government has renovated sanitary blocks in more than 40 schools, and another 50 projects are in progress. More than 20 million lei, according to him, were sent to Chisinau.

“Enough with cheap populism – look for real solutions for the city. “With all the money spent on outdoor advertising, banners and your speech in every trolleybus, the problems do not disappear – they become more numerous,” the minister added.

Commenting on the situation in Cimiseni, Perchun said that priority is given to schools with ready-made technical projects.

“There are many needs. This year, the department received 73 applications, we selected 23 – within the available 40 million lei. Gradually we will reach everyone, including Chimishen. Let the mayor help with the development of the technical project, and we will allocate the requested 2 million,” Perchun concluded.
