He Donald Trump government canceled a million-dollar contract with a Catholic Church charity in Miami, Florida, dedicated to sheltering and caring for migrant children who enter the United States alone, ending a decades-long relationship.
The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), an agency of the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), canceled the contract with the Catholic Charities office in Miami, which dated back to the arrival of the first Cuban exiles to South Florida.
Archbishop Thomas Wenski of the Archdiocese of Miami acknowledged in a note published by the Miami Heraldthat the United States government “has abruptly decided to end more than 60 years of relationship” with Catholic Charities.
“The Archdiocese of Miami’s services for unaccompanied minors have been recognized for their excellence and have served as a model for other agencies across the country. However, they have been stripped of their funding and will be forced to close within three months,” the archbishop added.
The closing of the contract occurs just amid tensions between the Trump administration and Pope Leo XIV and the Catholic community in the United States.
SundayOr, Trump assured that the pontiff is a man “weak against crime” and “terrible in foreign policy”alluding to his criticisms of Iran and Venezuela.
In a long message on his Truth Social network, the president urged the pontiff to “focus on being a great pope, not a politician,” because, he assured, “he is harming the Catholic Church.”
Following these statements, Trump published on Sunday night an image that appears to be created by artificial intelligence in which he shows himself embodying the figure of Jesus Christ and apparently healing a sick person lying in bed.
In response to the Republican, Leo XIV said that he “is not afraid of the Trump administration” and that he “will continue to raise his voice to build peace.”
Although without mentioning Trump’s name, the Pope has called it unacceptable and has encouraged the faithful to “communicate” with parliamentarians to ask for peace.
