Havana/The Government of Colombia sent a ship to Cuba this Friday with about 100 tons of humanitarian aid to mitigate the effects after the passage of Hurricane Melissa on the Island and the deficiencies caused by the energy and economic crisis, reinforced by the US blockade measures.
As reported by the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC Colombia), the ARC Caribe ship of the National Navy departed from the Colombian port of Cartagena de Indias with a shipment of basic supplies that includes non-perishable food, medicines, hospital supplies, electrical materials, household items and solar panels.
“This shipment represents a new example of Colombia’s commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian assistance between sister countries, strengthening ties of regional solidarity and contributing to the care of communities that continue to face vulnerable conditions,” said a statement from APC Colombia cited by Cuban state media.
“This shipment represents a new example of Colombia’s commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian assistance between brother countries.”
He also detailed that this mission was jointly coordinated by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Directorate of Taxes and Customs, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, the Foreign Ministry, the National Navy, among other organizations.
The general director of APC, Alexandra Palencia, said that the shipment represents “an expression of the solidarity that unites our people and the conviction that, in the face of difficulties, the response must be cooperation and mutual support.”
Added to this aid are more than seven tons of contributions from the Colombian Solidarity Movement, the Association of Cuban Residents and other civil society organizations, reported a report by the Cuban agency Prensa Latina.
Last April, Colombia sent a donation to Havana by air with medicines, medical supplies and food to help alleviate the shortage of supplies and essential products due to the severe crisis that the island is suffering.
Likewise, last November, the Colombian Government sent 240 tons of assistance to the island to respond to the emergency caused by the severe damage caused by Hurricane Melissa in the eastern Cuban region.
