Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone chaired a two-day government meeting this week in which officials reported progress on rescue operations, anti-crime crackdowns and economic management, while warning that global instability continues to pressure Laos’ economy.
Officials said international conflicts and economic uncertainty have affected commodity prices and transportation costs in Laos. Despite those pressures, the government said political stability remains intact.
The meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to rescue seven people trapped inside a cave in Xaisomboun Province.
Authorities also reported intensified crackdowns on illegal mining operations under Prime Minister’s Order No. 46. Officials said vehicles, machinery and equipment were seized and suspects detained in several provinces, including Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, Vientiane and Savannakhet.
The government also announced progress in dismantling online scam networks in multiple provinces and Vientiane Capital, leading to the arrest of Lao and foreign suspects.
Officials said fuel supply conditions have improved nationwide. State revenue collection has reached 40% of the annual target, while foreign currency reserves now cover more than five months of imports.
The government also reported progress on major infrastructure projects, including upgrades to National Road 13, Routes 9 and 12, and Pakse International Airport.
Among priorities for June 2026, officials pledged to continue crackdowns on scams, drugs and human trafficking, strengthen border security, improve disaster preparedness and support rescue efforts in Xaisomboun.
The meeting also discussed education reform, proposed amendments to budget and treasury laws and measures to address a fish die-off in Champasack Province.
In closing remarks, Prime Minister Sonexay urged ministries and local authorities to turn government plans into concrete actions with clear responsibilities and measurable results.
