A waterfall flows down from the skyscraper, but the reason is very different.

The 108-meter-high artificial waterfall, integrated into the 121-meter-high multi-purpose Liebian International Plaza skyscraper in Guiyang, China, became a trending topic among the international public after the images were shared on social media. The architectural structure, which is stated to be the highest artificial waterfall in the world, brought different evaluations in terms of its aesthetic features and energy consumption.

The system, which was installed in a skyscraper containing a hotel, shopping center and offices, was interpreted by the surrounding residents as the explosion of the main plumbing pipes when it was first operated. However, in the statements made by the operating company, it was announced that the building was operated with a special engineering system.

    WORKS WITH RECYCLED WATER

Mr. Cheng, spokesman for Guizhou Ludiya Property Management Company, which manages the building, shared technical details about the working principle of the waterfall in his statement to the local press. Cheng stated that there is a four-storey underground water storage and drainage system under the building, and the water here is constantly recycled by being carried upwards through powerful pumps. It was noted that the main water source used in the system consists of purified tap water and rainwater.

    IT CAUSED DISCUSSIONS

The commissioning of the waterfall brought about allegations of waste of resources in the public. Some local residents and social media users claimed that the waterfall consumed high amounts of water and electricity and that the project caused unnecessary energy loss.

Responding to criticism, Mr. Cheng, the company spokesman, confirmed that the hourly electricity cost for the four 185-kilowatt pumps that pumped water to the top of the skyscraper was about $118. Cheng emphasized that the company has high experience in water conservation and management structures, and stated that in order to save energy, the waterfall is not kept open all the time, but is only operated for 10 to 20 minutes per trip on special days and celebrations.
