The huge infrastructure works carried out at the Port of Genoa, one of the most important trade gates of Italy, continue without slowing down. Within the scope of the project carried out off the port, giant concrete structures called “megacaisson” are placed on the seabed. While the height of some blocks reaches up to 33 meters, these structures are planned to be located at a depth of approximately 50 meters.
NEW PROTECTION LINE FOR GIANT CONTAINER SHIPS
With the completion of the project, it is aimed to significantly increase the capacity of Genoa Port. Thanks to the new sea barrier, it is aimed that modern container ships with a length of approximately 400 meters can enter the port safely. Authorities state that the existing infrastructure has difficulty responding to today’s ever-growing cargo ships, so a comprehensive modernization process has been initiated.
MEGACAISON TECHNOLOGY ATTRACTS ATTENTION
The giant concrete structures used in the project have a special design consisting of hollow cells, unlike traditional blocks. Thanks to this system, the weight distribution is balanced and it becomes possible to place the structures on the seabed in a controlled and precise manner. Experts say that each megacaisson is the size of a small building.
ENGINEERING EXAM IN THE DIFFICULT CONDITIONS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
Engineers emphasize that the deep waters of the Mediterranean and the occasionally harsh sea conditions make the project quite technically complex. Specially equipped ships are used for offshore construction activities and placement of concrete structures weighing thousands of tons with millimetric precision.
IT WILL MAKE A STRATEGIC CONTRIBUTION TO EUROPEAN TRADE
The aim of the multi-phase work is to complete the majority of the project by 2030. With the introduction of the new barrier, the Port of Genoa is expected to serve larger cargo volumes and strengthen its position in Europe’s logistics network. Italy considers this investment as one of the most strategic transportation projects in the Mediterranean basin.
IT ALSO CONTAINS IMPORTANT MESSAGES FOR Türkiye
Türkiye, which has a long coastline on the Mediterranean, has been making significant investments to increase its port capacity in recent years. This giant project in Genoa shows how critical infrastructure suitable for large-tonnage ships has become in the future of maritime trade.
