SUPP celebrated its 67th anniversary on June 4.
KUCHING (June 4): The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is celebrating its 67th anniversary with renewed purpose to build a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is SUPP president, said the oldest political party in Sarawak had stood by a simple but powerful belief – Sarawak is for Sarawakians – for the past 67 years.
“Guided by the Sarawak way of progressiveness, inclusivity, mutual respect and acceptance, we have worked to safeguard Sarawak’s identity and bring Sarawakians together in the spirit of nation-building.
“At a time when divisive politicking and toxicity are increasingly common, this conviction matters more than ever,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
Dr Sim pointed out that SUPP members have achieved many important milestones across generations.
These include the constitutional recognition of the rights enshrined under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the affirmation of Sarawak’s status as an equal partner in the Federation of Malaysia, he said.
Even so, he stressed: “But our journey is far from over.”
Over the decades, he said, their predecessors answered the call of their generation and rose to the challenges of their time.
“Today, it is our turn. As Sarawak grows in confidence and takes its place nationally, regionally and globally, each of us has a role in shaping our future and ensuring that Sarawak’s coming Golden Age benefits every community and every generation,” he said.
Dr Sim thus appealed to SUPP members to move forward with renewed purpose to build a stronger, more united and more prosperous Sarawak.
“Happy 67th anniversary, SUPP,” he concluded.
