The Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, He stressed that the Public Ministry remains firm and that “will not stop the fight against corruption under any circumstances.”
“The Public Ministry, “As a prosecutorial body of the State, it has a clear, firm and definitive message for citizens: under no circumstances are we going to stop the fight against corruption,” Reynoso emphasized in a statement.
He considered that it is not only a constitutional obligation, but a deep conviction that he has always defended. “Corruption is not a simple crime: It is a serious violation of human rights,” he stressed.
He said that “that Every public resource diverted means less health in our hospitals, less quality in the education of our children, less security on our streets and a direct theft of the opportunities of present and future generations.”
Regarding the recent judicial decisions and the constitutional duty that the Public Ministry has to appeal, he said that he has participated directly in the investigations and knows the evidence first-hand.
“For that reason, allowing a wrongful order to pass that is not based on law, and that favors defendants who played a fundamental role within a criminal structure, would not be honest or fair for the country,” he added.
“The funds were received by defendants favored by the decision. The evidence is there. The accusation is public and the country can see it. It is evident that the decision contains elementary procedural flaws that even a law student could easily identify,” he declared.
He reaffirmed that the Public Ministry will appeal this decision because the criminal involvement proven through direct testimony, and corroborated with dozens of pieces of evidence, must be heard in a substantive trial.
“We cannot ignore the truth. We witnessed how a defendant, today favored with no place, admitted in our presence and in that of his lawyers to have received more than 700 million pesos in cash, money from acts of corruption,” he said.
Regarding the court’s decision, he considered that each actor in the justice system has to play their role. “We guarantee that, from our management, we will play ours until all available procedural resources are exhausted. It will be up to the other judicial bodies to assume, in accordance with the law, the responsibility that falls to them,” said Reynoso.
He argued that those who bet on impunity can continue spending millions on campaigns, lies and attempts to distort the truth. However, he stated that the country must know with absolute certainty that their unwavering will to do the right thing will never be broken.
“We know where these attacks come from and who is part of them. But we have always believed that the only decent response of a prosecutor to the obstacles to doing his job is to be more prosecutorial: firmer, stronger, more persistent and more committed to the Constitution and the law,” he declared.
He said that stopping the fight against corruption will never be an option, while recognizing that the fight against this scourge in the country is advancing.
In this sense, he recalled that the Public Ministry can cite 274 accused natural and legal persons, 74 convictions of natural and legal persons obtained in the cases known to date and 174 orders for opening trials.
Also more than RD$6,000 million confiscated, strong convictions and historic confiscations in favor of the State and a Penal Code that contemplates new types of criminal offenses regarding crimes against public property.
He also mentioned the implementation of vital legal tools such as the Asset Forfeiture Law and the Purchasing and Contracting Law, as well as the recognition of the Dominican Republic as one of the countries with the greatest progress in the fight against corruption.
Reynoso explained that, despite the achievements, structural and historical challenges persist that they will continue to face. “Being passive in the face of acts of corruption is equivalent to allowing the present and future of our nation to be stolen from us,” he said.
“Our accusations are not a secret. They are public documents and are available in full on our platforms. The serious events occurred. The evidence exists. It is visible to everyone. And we will take each case to the end,” he stressed.
Reynoso guaranteed that they will continue to defend justice truly centered on people and that the State’s assets serve the well-being of the people and not the illicit enrichment of a few.
