The Albanian anti-corruption prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the project of a luxury resort on the island of Sazan in the Adriatic and the protected coastal area of Vjosa-Narta, connected to the company of the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, Politico reports today.
The project includes the uninhabited island of Sazan and several hundred hectares of the protected coastal area of Vjosa-Narta, home to flamingos, seals and a nesting site for sea turtles.
The Albanian Special Prosecutor’s Office for the fight against corruption – SPAK confirmed today that it has opened an investigation into the controversial changes in the protected status of the area and changes in the ownership of that land in 2024, which opened the door to the development of tourism.
Kushnerwho heads Affinity Partners, has a separate real estate portfolio valued at billions of dollars, and in August 2024 revealed plans to turn the Albania site into a luxury resort with about 10,000 rooms. At the beginning of 2026, he visited the area with his wife Ivanka.
In a recent interview with Politico, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed that talks between government representatives and Kushner about the agreement are ongoing, and today he denied in parliament that the project encroaches on a protected wildlife reserve.
According to him, the final proposal has not yet been submitted and the environmental impact study has not been completed.
Protests by citizens and environmental NGOs began at the end of May, when investors at the proposed site in southern Albania erected large fences with barbed wire, preventing local residents and tourists from accessing the beach.
Last night, citizens and environmental activists gathered in front of the government offices and demanded the termination of the project, the protection of the area from construction, and the resignation of the prime minister.
