Two Austrian tourists died after a suspension bridge collapsed near a popular waterfall on Flores Island, Indonesia, Vietnamese media outlet eVnExpress reported.
Authorities said the accident happened at Cunca Wulang Waterfall, a tourist attraction about a two-hour drive from the resort town of Labuan Bajo.
The victims, a 55-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman, fell into the river below bridge after some parts of the bridge structure collapsed as tourists were crossing the bridge.
Fatur Rahman, head of the local search and rescue service, said the bodies were later recovered from the river just below the bridge.
The couple’s guide told the local newspaper “Hey Bali News” that the two were next to each other a few moments before the bridge collapsed.
“Suddenly I heard a very loud sound of a tree breaking, like a big tree branch falling,” the guide added.
According to Hey Bali News, suspension bridges in remote areas of Indonesia are often built from locally available materials and are not regularly inspected.
Fatal accidents occur periodically in Indonesiain which tourists die.
