Manchester United‘s run of form has come to an ugly end, suffering a shock 2-1 loss against Premier League relegation battlers Leeds United.
The defeat came after a brain fade from Lisandro Martinez, who was sent off early in the second half for a hair pull on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The incident was initially overlooked by the on-field referee, but an intervention from the video official halted play in the 56th minute.
After a quick video review Martinez was then handed a red card by Paul Tierney, despite his best efforts to argue with the decision.
Replays showed a clear hair pull from the Argentinian midfielder.
“Lisandro Martinez is dismissed for violent conduct and Manchester United, who are two goals down, are also a man down now,” commentator Peter Drury said.
“It just goes from bad to worse tonight for Michael Carrick, his side had been in such good form since he took over, but they have imploded this evening.
“He [Martinez] looks perplexed, but he must know the offence he’s committed.”
United were already down 2-0 when they were reduced to a man down after a first-half double from Noah Okafor in the fifth and 29th minutes.
Casemiro gave the home fans at Old Trafford a glimmer of hope in the 69th minute, but they were unable to find an equaliser in the dying stages.
Interim coach Michael Carrick had done a terrific job turning the Red Devils around in recent times and has the powerhouse club entrenched in the top-four.
Man United are level with Aston Villa on 55 points and three points clear of Liverpool.
The win for Leeds places them six points clear of the drop zone.
