The Specialist Hospital (500-bed) in Yangon successfully performed its 40th liver transplant surgery on 3 July, involving a 48-year-old male patient and his 25-year-old niece as the liver donor. Both are receiving post-operative care in the intensive care unit and are reported to be in stable condition.
The surgery was carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team led by Professor Dr Min Zaw Oo, with support from specialists in liver surgery, hepatology, anaesthesia, cardiovascular surgery, diagnostics, radiology, blood services and hospital staff. Professor Kwang Woong Lee from Seoul National University Hospital, the Republic of Korea, also participated in the procedure.
Since liver transplant surgeries began in 2004, Myanmar’s public hospitals have successfully performed 40 liver transplant procedures – two at Yangon General Hospital and 38 at the Specialist Hospital (500-bed). The service will continue to provide advanced treatment locally and help reduce patients’ healthcare expenses. — MNA/MKKS
