NEW-NICKERIE — 47-year-old MR was seriously injured in a dispute between neighbors on Cassaveweg in the Nickerie district that got out of hand. The woman suffered serious facial injuries. Due to the severity of her injuries, the woman, who was taken to the Mungra Medical Center by family members, was admitted to hospital for (further) medical treatment.
The Suriname Police Corps (KPS) writes on its website that law enforcement officers responded in the early morning on Wednesday after a report of extreme noise pollution. Officers confiscated a music box to restore peace. However, shortly after the police left, the situation escalated. A verbal altercation between local residents quickly turned into a massive brawl in the yard.
According to the KPS, the quarreling neighbors were summoned to the Nieuw-Nickerie police station on Friday. The police then proceeded to arrest them and bring them to trial before an assistant public prosecutor. After coordination with the Public Prosecution Service, BJ (21 years old), HH (39) and JS (55) were taken into custody. Five other people involved – KF (21), JR (29), BR (33), SB (55) and BH (64) – were released after questioning. The investigation continues.
