SUMMER WEATHER RECORD
June showed great differences in weather. Narsarsuaq did not receive a single drop of rain, which has not happened since measurements began in 1961. At the same time, Tasiilaq experienced its third wettest June ever, data from the Danish Meteorological Institute show.
June 2026 became the month when the raincoat could be left hanging in the closet in Narsarsuaq. In fact, 0.0 millimeters of precipitation fell during the entire month, and it is the first time in 65 years that June has gone completely without rain since measurements began in 1961. Climatologist Caroline Drost Jensen from DMI informs Sermitsiaq.
The unusually dry month stands as the most significant weather story in this country. Normally about 44.8 millimeters of rain falls in Narsarsuaq during the month, but this time the rain gauge remained completely dry.
Also in Qaqortoq, June was extraordinarily dry. Only 1.7 millimeters was measured here, which is also the lowest level recorded for June since the beginning of the measurement series in 1961. In comparison, Qaqortoq usually receives around 69.3 millimeters of rain during the month.
Great contrast in Greenland
While South Greenland experienced an unusually dry start to summer, the picture was quite different on the east coast.
In Tasiilaq, June was one of the wettest on record. Here, 108.4 millimeters of precipitation fell, which is more than three times as much as normal for the month. Thus, June 2026 became the third wettest June recorded at the measuring station since 1898. Normally, 34.9 millimeters of precipitation falls in Tasiilaq in June.
