As the Caribbean joins the world in observing International Day of the Girl on October 11, the Vision to Velocity Next Generation Initiative is encouraging greater investment in young women, highlighting that they can pursue their ambitions without feeling they must leave the region to succeed.
Founded by business strategist, author, and leadership expert Shelly-Ann Aqui Solomon, a press release said the initiative targets women between the ages of 17 and 25, when many are making decisions about education, careers, and entrepreneurship.
At the recent From Vision to Velocity Conference, a selected group of young women reportedly joined established entrepreneurs and business leaders for discussions on business, leadership, financial empowerment, visibility, and personal development. Participants also had opportunities to connect with people whose experience and professional networks could help inform their future decisions.
Solomon said young women need more than encouragement to pursue entrepreneurship and leadership; they must also have access to the knowledge, relationships and opportunities that can help them turn their ambitions into reality.
A central message of the initiative is that Caribbean women can build businesses, create wealth and develop fulfilling lives while remaining in the region. Solomon emphasised that their Caribbean roots should not limit their aspirations and that ideas developed on the islands can reach international markets.
“Our islands can be launchpads, not limitations,” she said.
The initiative aims to extend mentorship, business knowledge and professional networking opportunities to more young women across the Caribbean. It also encourages established Caribbean women to share their experiences, connections and opportunities with those coming behind them.
Solomon brings nearly three decades of business experience to this work, having impacted women and entrepreneurs in more than 30 countries. She views creating opportunities for the next generation as an important part of her own development as an entrepreneur.
The initiative’s approach centres on giving young women opportunities to observe leadership firsthand, ask questions, develop relationships and build confidence in their own potential.
As International Day of the Girl highlights the possibilities available to girls and young women, the initiative is emphasising the importance of equipping the next generation to shape their futures, contribute to their communities and pursue opportunities at home and internationally.
