Turmush — There are several legends about the “Broken Heart” mountain in the Jeti-Oguz district of the Issyk-Kul region. Candidate of Philological Sciences, resident of the district Bekmurza Zhumabaev spoke about one of them.
According to legend, in ancient times, a guy and a girl who liked each other lived in the Jeti-Oguz gorge. As a result, fate played a cruel joke on them.
The young man’s name was Zhetigen, and the girl’s name was Cholpon. They decide to be together and discuss a future together, even vowing to each other to spend the rest of their lives together.
At this time, a close relative of Zhetigen named Baskak came and said that Cholpon’s parents were marrying her to another person. “But these words were spoken out of completely bad thoughts, because Baskak himself liked Cholpon. Zhetigen did not believe a single word then. Meanwhile, the days passed and the time was approaching when Zhetigen and Cholpon were to get married. When the celebration began, out of jealousy, Baskak, together with his comrade Odurman, gathered a large number of guys and caused a commotion among the local residents. He wanted to kill Zhetigen in order to subsequently marry Cholpon. By this time, Zhetigen’s father, Kazyk, and Cholpon’s father, Urkor, unexpectedly appeared.
During the brawl, Zhetigen began to fight with Odurman, but the latter violated the conditions of a fair fight and fired a bow straight into Zhetigen’s heart. And Cholpon’s younger brother, Zhyldyzbek, struck Baskak with his sword, after which he fell to the ground. With his last breath, Baskak uttered words about his love for Cholpon… Zhetigen also addressed the girl: “Oh, my beloved. I couldn’t even imagine in my dreams that we would face such a fate. Now you show courage – open my chest and pull the arrow out of my heart…” (“Oo suygonum, ushunday tagdyrga tush bolorubuz min uktasam tushumo kirgen emes. Amy sen erdik kylyp, toshumdu zharyp, zhurөgүmdөgү zhebeni surup al”).
But Cholpon did not have the courage to do this and, turning to her brother, she said: “Zhyldyzbek, you are stronger than me. Fulfill the request of your “zhezde” so that we can save him” (“Zhyldyzbek sen Maga Karaganda alda-kaida kүүlulu-kүchtuүүsң. Zhezdendin suranychyn ozүn atkara kor, ana aman alyp kalala”). During the removal of the arrow, Zhyldyzbek also tore out Zhetigen’s heart.
In an instant it became dark and a blizzard began. When the light appeared again, those who were there discovered that Zhetigen’s body had disappeared without a trace. A ray of sun began to shine on the piece of land where Zhetigen lay. He shone in a special way. Holding a heart in his hand, Zhyldyzbek said: “Sister, look how the heart of the heart burns.” Call him, say it in a sensual voice. If he hears you, his heart may find peace.” In a tearful state, Cholpon said: “Zhetigen, where are you?! Let me hear your voice.” At this time, Zhetigen’s voice began to be heard from the sky. Having spread her arms wide, in the hope of flying to the sky, the girl rushed down from the cliff. At that moment, the sounds of animals were heard, dogs began to bark… The rocks began to crumble, a terrible roar began… The next day it became light everywhere, and all the rocks acquired a dark red color,” said the candidate of science.
