A tree that came into contact with power lines near DOMLEC’s Fond Cole Power Station caused an unplanned islandwide electricity outage early on Tuesday, leaving customers across Dominica without service.
The Dominica Electricity Services Ltd. (DOMLEC) said it was investigating the disruption after becoming aware of the outage affecting customers around the island.
In an update, the company reported that electricity had been restored to several communities along the west coast and into the north of the island, as of 12:41 PM, with communities from Colihaut to Wesley among those powered.
At the time of the update, other areas remained without electricity, including communities from Wesley to the northern end of the island, the east coast, Laudat, and the southern corridor stretching from Castle Comfort through Scotts Head to Grand Bay.
DOMLEC initially advised that electricity was expected to return to the remaining affected areas within an hour as restoration work continued.
The company said it was working to determine the extent of the disruption and implement a solution safely and as quickly as possible.
DOMLEC apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage and thanked them for their patience and understanding while crews worked to restore service.
The utility also urged customers to remain attentive to further updates as efforts to return electricity to all affected communities continued.
