It began as an attempt to break up a fight outside a nightclub, but a transport officer is now on the wrong side of the law. Police have arrested and charged thirty‑three‑year‑old transport officer Ignatius Peyrefitte with aggravated assault after an early‑morning confrontation in the parking lot of a nightclub on Newtown Barracks. Investigators say the incident escalated when a businessman stepped in to stop a fight between two women and was then confronted by Peyrefitte, who allegedly drew and cocked a firearm. Officers already on the scene quickly moved in, detaining him on the spot. The case is now putting the spotlight on judgment and accountability, and on how traffic officers carry themselves when they’re off duty and out in public.

“He was charged with aggravated assault for firearm. And thankfully the virtual complainant in the matter – he pled not guilty to it and the virtual complainant in the matter had indicated that in the first instance that he was not interested in pursuing any criminal charges against him. However, he did make a statement for reference. However, the officers exercising their discretion, still exercised their discretion to charge him with assault with a firearm. So he appeared before the magistrate this morning who indicated that she required for both the virtual complainant to come in and as well, to get a further statement. We got both of those by this afternoon and saw the magistrate dismissed the matter against him.”
