SAN MARINO – TOMORROW – Motus Liberi relaunches the proposal to open a technical-political table on the energy future of the Republic, also including advanced nuclear technologies and small modular reactors (SMR) in the evaluation.
The position comes after the final approval by the Italian Senate of the bill on sustainable nuclear energy. According to DOMANI – Motus Liberi, the provision represents an important step in the European debate on climate neutrality, energy security and independence and cost containment.
“The starting point, as far as we are concerned, is a fact that is too often overlooked: San Marino already uses energy of nuclear origin,” states the movement. According to AASS data cited in the press release, in 2025 this source represented 4.07% of the national energy mix, through energy coming from France, where nuclear continues to play a central role.
For TOMORROW – Motus Liberi, the question is therefore whether San Marino can afford not to evaluate this technology. “The question is therefore not whether we can afford to discuss nuclear power, but whether we can afford not to,” the note reads.
The movement proposes to evaluate the different technologies available without excluding nuclear power a priori. In particular, SMRs are indicated as a perspective to be explored in greater depth, through the involvement of independent experts called upon to provide an assessment of costs, timing, safety and sustainability.
“The primary aim – around which, we are sure, the other political forces can only converge – is to put San Marino in a position to choose, without relying on a single technology and without excluding others a priori”, argues DOMANI – Motus Liberi.
The statement also criticizes the government’s choice to spend up to 15 million euros to purchase solar parks in Italy. The movement defines this decision as “short-sighted”, arguing that “it does not produce skills, it does not create a supply chain, it does not reduce dependence”.
TOMORROW – Finally, Motus Liberi recalls that in recent months it has already proposed a discussion on new generation nuclear power, stating that it will continue to explore “the opportunities that could arise from the new Italian and European scenario”, from participation in common projects and supply chains to the evolution of SMRs and other advanced technologies.
“Because San Marino’s energy future must be planned with study, skills and strategic vision”, concludes the movement.
