The White House said Friday it would not disclose details of the private diplomatic talks when asked about a new Iranian proposal to resume talks with the United States, submitted to Pakistani mediators.
– We do not disclose the details of private diplomatic talks. President (Donald) Trump has been clear that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons, and negotiations are continuing to ensure short-term and long-term US national security, spokeswoman Anna Kelly told Reuters.
Iran presented a new offer aimed at resuming negotiations with the United States to permanently end the war, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported on Friday.
The ceasefire took effect on April 8, after nearly 40 days of Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes in the region, and peace talks have been stalled ever since.
Only one round of negotiations was held on April 11 in Pakistan, but it did not end in success. The Strait of Hormuz is still blocked by Iran, while Washington maintains a blockade of Iranian ports.
Earlier this week, Tehran made a previous offer that Donald Trump rejected. Iran’s idea was allegedly to postpone the discussions on the nuclear issue to a later date, the American Axios reported.
It is a central issue for the United States and Israel, which accuse Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.
