Trinidadian media are reporting that calypso legend Slinger Francisco, “The Mighty Sparrow,” has died.
They said he passed away peacefully on Sunday in New York, surrounded by loved ones after a brief illness. He was 91.
“He was also a husband, father, grandfather, great‑grandfather, life partner, and friend,” his family said in a statement.
Francisco, hailed as a cultural institution, influenced generations through his songwriting, performance, and mentorship. His career spanned more than six decades and produced countless hits, including Jean and Dinah, Mr Walker, Congo Man, Drunk and Disorderly, and Obeah Wedding (Melda).
His family said they take solace in knowing he had embraced the Seventh‑day Adventist faith before his death.
