A man who was tased three times after striking a police officer in the head, still managed to escape being arrested on Tuesday.
It was following a request for assistance by emergency technicians who were contacted by the man’s family, that the officers met the Penal man who has mental health issues and is known to them.
They attempted to speak to him about taking his medication but he began using obscene language. He was told he was under arrest for the foul language but when the officer tried to hold on to his right hand, the man began pulling away in a violent manner. He was told of the offence of resisting arrest.
While other officers intervened, the man started swinging his fists in a violent manner at them, hitting one in the head and face. He continued to attempt to physically assault the officers and one of them used the taser. Although it was used three times on the man, and he was also struck on his knees by the police, these had little to no effect. The man managed to break free from the officers and flee. They chased after him in areas of Penal but he escaped along a bushy track and was not found.
The injured officer was taken for medical attention at the Siparia District Health Facility.
