Regional Sports Development and Collaboration
Our hosts, Isani and Sabreena, welcomed Taahir Bulbulia, Community and Youth Engagement Officer with the National Transformation Initiative (NTI) and Special Adviser to the Minister of Sports in Barbados, for an engaging discussion on the development and advancement of sports across the region. Bulbulia was in Belize as a featured speaker, bringing his regional experience and expertise to the conversation.
During his engagement, Bulbulia focused on three key areas: sports facilities, high performance, and regional access. He highlighted the importance of having quality sporting facilities that are not only available but properly developed, maintained, and accessible to athletes and communities. He also emphasized how effective infrastructure can create greater opportunities for young people and contribute to the growth of sports at all levels.
Building High-Performance Pathways
Bulbulia also discussed the importance of establishing strong high-performance pathways that allow athletes to progress from grassroots’ participation to elite competition. He noted that athletes need more than talent to succeed, pointing to the importance of quality coaching, training opportunities, appropriate facilities, sports science, and other forms of support.
Drawing from his experience in Barbados, Bulbulia shared perspectives on how government, sporting organizations, communities, and other stakeholders can work together to create a stronger sporting environment. His experience as Special Adviser to the Minister of Sports gave him firsthand insight into the opportunities and challenges involved in developing sports programs, facilities, and policies.
Lessons from Barbados and the Way Forward
The conversation with Isani and Sabreena also gave Bulbulia an opportunity to reflect on his work advising the Minister of Sports in Barbados and the lessons he has gained through that experience. His perspective provided a valuable regional comparison and encouraged discussion about how successful approaches from Barbados and other Caribbean countries could potentially be adapted to Belize’s sporting landscape.
Ultimately, Bulbulia’s visit emphasized the value of regional collaboration and knowledge-sharing in strengthening sports throughout the Caribbean. By investing in facilities, creating clear pathways for high-performance athletes, and expanding access to sporting opportunities, Belize can continue building an environment where young people and athletes are empowered to develop their talents and pursue opportunities both locally and on the regional and international stage.
