The topic of skin bleaching is often discussed as though it were a modern aberration, particularly in Afro-Caribbean societies. Yet, this framing can be intellectually incomplete. Practices aimed at lightening or altering the appearance of the skin have existed for centuries across many cultures. In parts of South Asia, for example, skin lightening has long been socially acceptable and deeply intertwined with caste hierarchies, marriage prospects, and social mobility. In many places, skin-lightening products are openly advertised and widely used.
In Jamaica, however, skin bleaching, which often results in skin lightening, occupies a very different social and academic space. It is frequently framed as a social problem that must be explained through the lenses of postcolonial trauma and colourism. People who bleach are sometimes presumed to harbour profound self-hatred or sociopolitical dysfunction. While these interpretations may have merit, are we overlooking other important factors that motivate people to use skin-lightening products?
After all, contemporary society is saturated with appearance-altering interventions. Botox, dermal fillers, orthodontics, and chemical peels are widely accepted and often celebrated across social groups. Rarely are these practices framed as evidence of a collective psychological crisis.
Research in Jamaica and elsewhere has consistently identified common motivations among people who bleach. However, there is a more nuanced and often overlooked motive that emerges in clinical settings. Some individuals who use skin-lightening products are not primarily seeking a lighter complexion. Rather, they are seeking relief from acne, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and other common dermatologic concerns.
In consultations, patients frequently explain their actions in practical terms: “Doc, mi a try get rid a di spots” or “Mi just waan clear up mi face”. These are not necessarily sociopolitical statements. Instead, they may be expressions of unmet dermatologic needs.
I often ask patients who use skin-lightening agents to describe their ideal skin. Interestingly, their answers do not invariably point to lighter skin. Many cite richly pigmented public figures whose appeal lies not in their complexion but in having skin that appears healthy and clear. This distinction is important. Patients often struggle to articulate their dermatologic concerns and may not know how to address them safely or effectively.
Treatments such as topical retinoids, isotretinoin, chemical peels, and other pigment-correcting therapies can be expensive and may take time to produce visible results. Skin-lightening products, by contrast, are inexpensive, widely available, and often deliver rapid, noticeable changes. Unsurprisingly, many people are drawn to interventions that seem dramatic and tangible.
This preference for visible results is not unique to skincare. The Jamaican tradition of “washouts”, herbal purgatives taken to cleanse the body, reflects a long-standing belief in treatments that produce observable effects. Part of their appeal lies in the sense that something concrete is happening.
What is often missing from public discourse is a clearer distinction between skin brightness and skin colour. Some individuals are not seeking to become lighter but rather to appear more radiant. A useful analogy is that of colour and light: increasing the brightness of a forest-green screen does not turn it teal. The colour remains the same, but the image appears more vibrant.
Similarly, in dermatology, agents such as retinoids, niacinamide, azelaic acid, and vitamin C can improve skin luminosity and texture without significantly altering a person’s natural skin colour. Yet without easy access to professional dermatologic care and education, many people turn to the products they know, skin-lightening agents.
None of this is meant to deny the complex sociopolitical history surrounding skin colour in postcolonial societies. Those forces exist, and they matter. The purpose here is simply to highlight another frequently overlooked factor behind some skin-bleaching practices, unmet dermatologic needs.
If we hope to make meaningful progress in addressing skin bleaching, solutions cannot rest solely on sociopolitical and psychological analyses. They must also include expanded access to dermatologic services, culturally relevant skin-health education, and affordable treatment options that meet patients where they are.
By understanding that many individuals are seeking healthier-looking skin rather than a different racial identity, we may be able to develop more effective, compassionate, and practical responses to the issue.
