THE signing of Jarome Luai by the PNG Chiefs has sent shockwaves across the NRL, but according to club general manager Michael Chammas, money was never the deciding factor.
Chammas revealed that the turning point came during Luai’s visit to PNG, where he experienced firsthand the passion and unity rugby league inspires among the people.
“It wasn’t even about football,” he said. “It was about the country and what he could do for the people.”
Powerful conversations with national leaders, including Prime Minister James Marape, helped Luai see the bigger picture: how rugby league can be a force for social change, tackling issues like domestic violence, encouraging education, and strengthening national unity. Chammas said without (last weekend’s) trip, Luai would not have signed.
“If he doesn’t go on that trip, he doesn’t sign,” he stated.
The emotional connection was clear. Locals reacted with shock, excitement, and pride when they saw Luai in the streets, and Chammas noted how visibly moved the star was by their response.
