More local operators, new collaborations and increasing cruise activity will lift tourism to nearly 30,000 annual guests.
Tourism in Paamiut has been in a markedly positive development over the past eight years. With 29,873 registered visitors via cruise tourism in 2025, Paamiut has taken third place on the coast, measured by number of guests.
This is what Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq writes on their website.
Interest in tourism has grown significantly as the number of visitors has increased. Therefore, the local tourism players in Paamiut have actively engaged in developing tourism and building the industry.
The development has taken place in close cooperation between local actors and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. Visit Paamiut, which is part of the municipality’s Business Department, has had a central role in supporting the development of the tourism industry, among other things through advice, skills development and concrete courses for local entrepreneurs.
There are four boat operators in Paamiut and one established land-based tourism operator, and several of the local operators have participated in the municipality’s PAX 12 safety certification courses.
– It is very positive to see how tourism in Paamiut has developed over a number of years. A strong local commitment has been created, and we can see that the cooperation between companies and the municipality yields concrete results, says Mayor Avaaraq Olsen (IA), who is chairman of the Committee for Economy and Business.
New tourist agency on the way
The increasing tourism is largely linked to increased activity in cruise tourism. At the same time, the many calls have created the basis for the development of new products and experiences aimed at shorter visits to the city.
A new tourist agency is also being planned in Paamiut, which is expected to be established during the year. The purpose is to gather and coordinate activities across local actors and thus ensure a more coherent handling of bookings, planning and execution of experiences – especially in connection with cruise calls.
The initiative is based on a close collaboration between several local companies, where the goal is to create stronger and more coherent tourism products. It is estimated to be able to raise both the quality and capacity of Paamiut as a destination, especially in line with the increasing interest from cruise tourism.
– We have a good foundation to build on. With several local initiatives and a continued development of the tourism products, Paamiut is in a strong position to attract even more guests in the coming years, says Avaaraq Olsen.
Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq expects that the development in Paamiut will continue in the coming years.
