MANCHESTER, England – Jamaican international Khadija “Bunny” Shaw scored an important second half goal to ensure Manchester City and Real Madrid played to a 1-1 draw in the Women’s Champions League in England on Thursday.
Shaw’s 51st minute strike cancelled out Linda Caicedo’s first half goal to give City their second draw in as many matches in the tournament.
Caicedo put Real ahead in the 29th minute with a clever finish, though goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita perhaps could have done better.
The home side created chances in a fairly open first half that saw Shaw’s looping header being tipped over after Mary Fowler earlier nodded on to the crossbar.
City finally drew level in the early minutes of the second half, when Shaw spun in the box and finished powerfully into the far corner.
Caicedo, along with forward Felicia Schroder, continued to press forward in search of a winner, and the former went close to doubling her tally, but her effort flew wide.
City’s Lauren Hemp, Yui Hasegawa and Beth Mead all squandered chances, as neither side was able to add to their tally.
The result leaves City in 11th position with two points from their two games, with Real Madrid one spot below with a similar record.
