From San Marino information (by Marino Cecchetti) – On 10 September the Secretary of State Luca Beccari in the Foreign Affairs Commission criticized certain “political readings circulated” regarding the referendum held in Ireland at the end of August. With said referendum, Ireland “he decided to do not become a Member State” of the European Union, and, therefore, to remain as it is now, a member of the “European Economic Area” together with Liechtenstein and Norway.
Beccari said that at the basis of the European Economic Area there is “an agreement that is practically identical to what we are going to sign“, Meaning what identical to the Association Agreement with the European Union!
No, it’s not like that. Error by the scribe? Thatidentical it has neither head nor tail.
The Association Agreement with the European Union which “we’re going to sign“, in the opinion of our consultant, Prof. Roberto Baratta, forces us to implement – automatically! – over 10 thousand regulatory acts and undermines our sovereignty, so we must first quantify the “economic compensationHow many euros is worth a sovereignty that took us 17 centuries to achieve?
That things are not as we read in the aforementioned minutes is also demonstrated by another fact: Liechtenstein has never even thought of signing the Association Agreement with the European Union: it is and remains in the European Economic Area.
In short, the two treaties are far from identical.
Everyone agreed in San Marino to establish a necessary new relationship with the European Union. Not, however, through the signing of the Association Agreement. Let’s follow the good example of Liechtensteinwe ask to join the European Economic Area too. We have written it many times. We quote for everyone the article entitled “San Marino in the EU in another way”.
