The announcement was made by her daughter, Dr Farita Tepora Wright in a heartfelt post on Thursday night.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother, a wife, a sister, a grandmother, aunt, and much more to many..”

“She passed peacefully this morning surrounded by her loving husband Toomata Tua Afamasaga, children, grandchildren and close family. More details will be shared soon. Rest peacefully mum 💔”

Gatoloai was a friend and mentor to so many and social media is already flooded with tributes by all whose lives she touched.

Gatoloaifaana was born on the 5th May 1947. She was educated at Samoa College, Hamilton Girls High School and Christchurch Teachers College where she gained a Diploma in Teaching in 1971.

She later attended Macquarie University in Australia where she obtained her BA Dip-Ed in 1978 and returned to Macquarie University to pursue her Master of Arts degree in Teacher Education, in 1993.

Gatoloai taught at Samoa College and Vaipouli College, before being appointed Principal of Western Samoa Teachers Training College in 1984. A position she held for thirteen years.

In 1997 the college merged with the National University of Samoa and Gatoloai became the founding Dean of the Faculty of Education from July 1997 to 2005.

Eight years later, she became the first Director of the University’s Oloamanu Centre for Professional Development and Continuing Education where she served  from January 2006 to June 2012.

In her second year as Director of Oloamanu, the Samoa In-Country Training Program (ICTP) was transferred from NZ management to the Oloamanu Centre under Gatoloai’s leadership.

Afamasaga was involved in the establishment of the Samoa Qualifications Authority, and later Chaired the Board of SQA.

Gatoloai was also a passionate advocate for workers rights including the drive to eradicate child labour. In 2014 she became the founding President of the Samoa Workers Congress, and a member of Samoa’s Tripartite Forum.

In 2016 she was awarded the Krishna Datt Award for Excellence in Trade Unionism and Leadership in the Pacific.

A pioneer of gender equality, Gatoloai also served as the Coordinator for the Increasing Political Participation of Women in Samoa Programme, a joint programme between UN Women and UNDP.

In 2013 she was appointed to a Commission of Inquiry to investigate abuse of power at Tafaigata prison.

In December 2022 the National University of Samoa awarded Gatoloai an Honorary Doctorate of Letters for her life long career as an Educator.

She was made a companion of the Order of Samoa at the 2023 Samoa Honours Awards.

Gatoloai’s work has placed her in various leadership roles and governance positions including memberships in professional associations including:

** Samoa National Teachers Association where she was President 1995-2012

** Council of Pacific Association of Teacher Educators (regional) where she was President (2003 – 2006) then Vice President 2007-2012, and President again (2012-2016)

Gatoloai was a mentor who touched the lives of all who were blessed to know her through her years serving Samoa as a teacher, workers union representative, a women in leadership advocate, and through various Instiutions of Government and Civil Society she served.

Gatoloaifaana will be dearly missed and will always be remembered as a long-serving high-achieving educationalist, dedicated to changing lives and inspiring everyone around her.

We express our deepest condolences to Afioga Toomata Tua Afamasaga and the family.

Rest in Peace and Love Gatoloai 💕
