Martyrs’ Day is observed in Myanmar annually to commemorate and pay tribute to General Aung San and other national leaders who were assassinated by colonialist agents on 19 July 1947 while they were holding a meeting on national independence at the Secretariat in Yangon.
A martyr is a person who can see wrong as wrong and right as right, upholds the genuine truth, and possesses the conviction to sacrifice their own life without considering it as important for the sake of others. Those who dare to sacrifice their lives courageously for the truth, and who are endowed with the qualities, noble characteristics, deep commitment, and great sacrifices of such individuals, can be called martyrs. In other words, only those who possess the hearts of the noble and are filled with such virtues and beauty of spirit are worthy of being called martyrs.
The present time is an opportunity for all people to learn lessons from past tragic events, prevent their recurrence, and work towards building a peaceful, prosperous and developed nation. The loss of the great leaders brought about many turning points in the history of Myanmar. These turning points caused delays in the country’s development processes. Therefore, the younger generation must actively participate in building a stable, peaceful and modern nation as envisioned by the great martyrs.
As the great martyr leaders had fallen, the remaining leaders continued to carry out their responsibilities so that the path towards Myanmar’s independence would not be affected. However, throughout Myanmar’s history, armed conflicts that emerged alongside independence have become obstacles to the country’s development. It is necessary to identify and analyze the root causes of these armed conflicts and give priority to achieving national unity among all people and ensuring peace and prosperity in the country.
The three main national causes: non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and the perpetuation of sovereignty are the national interests of the entire people and are also vital truths of great importance to the nation. Those who, up to the present day, are sacrificing and dedicating their lives for these three important national causes are also the martyrs of the present era.

The efforts of all citizens must be aligned with the aspirations of the great martyrs. Only when the aspirations of the great martyrs are successfully fulfilled can the nation become stable, peaceful, prosperous and developed. If the nation can be built in such a way, it will be as if the great martyrs have been revived and continue to live on.
