In the Traffic Light this Tuesday, October 6, find out El Comercio’s position on the following issues. First, the 18 months of preventive detention for the murder of Susy Aponte are a strong signal, but it is urgent to identify the intellectual authors. Second, Serafín Andrés Luján must correct the hiring with public funds of a person convicted of aggravated usurpation. Finally, more than S/5,000 million in paralyzed road works require reactivation with technical management, supervision and accountability.

🟢 THE GOOD 🟡 NEITHER BAD NOR GOOD 🔴 THE BAD
🟢Quick action of justice
The Judiciary issued 18 months of preventive detention against those investigated for the murder of the former candidate for the Regional Government of Áncash Susy Aponte, known as the ‘China Polo’. This decision constitutes a firm and necessary signal against crime. The prosecution supported its request with payments and transfers that point to the author and financier of the crime against the journalist. It is now necessary to identify the intellectual authors and protect the witnesses. We urge the authorities to guarantee a process without impunity.
🔴A senator who hires a convicted person
The fact that Senator Serafín Andrés Luján hired as a technician a person convicted of aggravated usurpation is outrageous. The sentence against the worker in his office describes that he acted with violence against a 76-year-old woman. Employing that person with public funds is unacceptable. If those who make up the Legislature do not show a minimum of ethics to decide who their workers are, what can we expect from their work? This contract must be corrected as soon as possible.
🔴Abandoned works, stagnant country
An IPE report published in this newspaper shows that more than S/5,000 million have been allocated to paralyzed or abandoned road works. Each stopped project makes investment more expensive, isolates communities and punishes those who wait for water, sanitation and better services. We demand the Executive, regional governments and municipalities to prioritize reactivation, sanction responsibilities and make schedules transparent. Announcements and inaugurations are not enough: technical management, strict supervision and accountability are needed.
