The Pontiff himself announced it today at the end of the Angelus
VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo The Pontiff himself announced it at the end of the Angelus on Sunday 11 October, explaining that the training was detected “in a very initial phase” and is “well localised”.
“The doctors deem it appropriate to intervene, and so, following their advice, I decided to have surgery to remove it,” declared Leo XIV to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
The director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, specified that the operation is scheduled for the first few days of next week and that the post-operative hospitalization should last about a week.
At the end of the announcement, the Pope thanked the faithful for their closeness and spiritual support, entrusting himself to their prayers: “I entrust myself to your prayers! Happy Sunday!”.
After the news, messages of sympathy arrived from the Italian Episcopal Conference and from Italian institutions. The president of the CEI, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, assured that the ecclesial communities will remember the Pontiff in celebrations and moments of prayer. “We thank Pope Leo for the simplicity and trust with which he made us participate in this trial. We are a family: Holy Father, you are not alone!”, he declared.
The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, also expressed her support, saying she was heartened by the “serenity and tranquility” with which the Pope communicated the decision and confident that “the Italian people will also not fail to show their affection”.
Finally, Comunione e Liberazione invited people to recite the Holy Rosary, in community and family, for the health of the Pontiff, so that he can continue his ministry at the service of the unity of the Church and peace.
