The Barbados Police Service has strengthened its senior command with the appointment of two deputy commissioners and three assistant commissioners.
The appointments took effect on Friday, just after Sonia Boyce was sworn in as the first woman to serve as Commissioner of Police.
Boyce presented letters of appointment at Police Headquarters following the confirmation of Barry Hunte and Adrian Broomes as deputy commissioners of police, and Stephen Herbert, David Welch and John Boyce as assistant commissioners.
Describing the occasion as “a joyous morning”, the commissioner noted that several of the officers had already been acting in their respective roles.
Congratulating the new senior command team, she said: “The Barbados Police Service is not a one woman or one man show,” adding that the group must move forward together, “hand in hand,” to advance the organisation.
She said the leadership team’s objective was to continue building the TBPS into an organisation that is not only among the best in the region, but among the best in the world.
Deputy Commissioner Hunte has served in senior leadership roles within the service, including oversight of special operations and management services, and has been recognised for his focus on leadership, standards, performance, change management and the effective execution of the service’s policing plan.
Deputy Commissioner Broomes has held key roles in disaster response and coordination and continues to pursue executive leadership training.
Assistant Commissioner Herbert is responsible for human resources and administration, with duties focused on workforce development, strategic training and inter-agency collaboration.
Assistant Commissioner Welch has responsibility for change management and technology services, while Assistant Commissioner John Boyce has served at senior command level, including responsibility for crime.
Deputy Commissioner Adrian Broomes was absent from the ceremony as he is overseas participating in a police executive training course.
