Phoenix battled to a 12-10 victory over Lady Pelicans, on the penultimate day of the Barbados Rugby Football Union season.
Playing at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday, Emilie Trotman got Phoenix on the scoreboard five minutes into the match, with the subsequent conversion kick by Alana Quintyne also being successful, to give their team a 7-0 lead.
Not to be outdone, Pelicans’ Leslie Griffith responded a mere three minutes later, but the conversion attempt by Kiamara Forde was unsuccessful, leading to a half-time score of 7-5 in favour of Phoenix.
The second half kicked off with end-to-end action, with both teams successfully defending against determined attempts from their opponents.
Trotman scored for Phoenix once again, but her attempted conversion kick fell woefully short. Griffith then followed with her second try of the match for Pelicans, but the conversion attempt by Kiamara Forde went wide.
With no additional points being secured by either team, the final score read Phoenix 12, Lady Pelicans 10.
The second scheduled fixture between Bajan Pride and Scorpions Women had to be cancelled due to Scorpions forfeiting the match, but the season concludes on Sunday July 19 .
A highlight of the evening’s action will be games in the women’s U16 and U19 formats by Barbadian teams, against the visiting Whanau Rugby Academy from Trinidad and Tobago.
Phoenix will also face Bajan Pride in the Women’s League final.
